A culmination of my exploratory work in Notational Systems, 2D Design, and Photography

Notational Systems

During my 1st year as a graduate student I sought understand the role of notational systems in analyzing, documenting, and comprehending human goals, behaviors, and perceptions to assess their value when designing for new experiences. Incorporating the different techniques in notation allowed me to visualize experiences, invisible forces, and processes which occur over time.

Notational systems consist of graphic symbols and codes designed to represent or instruct particular actions, forces, operations, events, or performances unfolding over time.

Utilizing Facilitator School’s character creation to show my emotions, color to highlight aspects important to me (the bread), and box width to visualize time, all helped me to create this notational visualization.

Focused on understanding and visualizing the emotions of 3 different users who are interacting with each other during a common experience.

The most complicated notational representation I created was of one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite shows. In order to give proper context a family tree had to be created with enough information for a complete newbie to the show to still have proper context.

In order to represent the scene itself, color is used to show each character, font represents the emotions, and the text’s location on the page shows the characters physical location within the room.

2D Design

The works below were part of my year long project focusing on the monotony of everyday life represented by the simple objects we use and the principle of repetition. Everything was hand drawn on Procreate and then edited using Photoshop.

Photography Project 1

This project below focuses on the disorientation and emotions felt while being awake at night. I traveled to a bowling alley to use the harsh neon lights to give the feeling of walking through a major metropolitan city. All images were edited in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Photography Project 2

This project is centered around the sun, shadows, and golden hour. These images were taken around my neighborhood as we explored different ways light can affect a photograph when working with different lighting including: direct light, indirect light, harsh exposure, and backlit photography. All images were edited in VSCO, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
